Snow Message is an interactive physical display that simulates a snowstorm using circulating polystyrene grains to convey an environmental message about disappearing glaciers. The installation operates using fans to disperse the particles within an enclosure, while a grid of 288 air exhausts behind a black fabric screen selectively applies suction to hold the grains in place and form physical pixels. As visitors approach, their proximity triggers dynamic, swirling snowstorms that eventually calm to reveal messages such as "Save the glaciers" alongside the current time, creating a playful yet poignant reminder of nature's fragility.
Building upon Myeongseong Kim's earlier "Snow" series, this project introduces novel interaction techniques that respond more dynamically to visitors' spatial movements. Furthermore, the system's engineering was enhanced to significantly improve long-term stability and environmental adaptability—particularly concerning humidity—ensuring its robustness for extended real-world exhibitions.
